# What Is a Focus Indicator?

Last updated: 2026-09-30

Page version: [Focus indicator](https://accesserty.com/en/glossary/focus-indicator/)

A focus indicator shows the current keyboard position. Do not remove the browser outline without a clear replacement.

Use Tab/Shift+Tab between components and the expected arrow-key pattern inside composite widgets; not every child item needs its own Tab stop. Check actual backgrounds, themes, zoom, and obstruction from sticky or floating content, not just a screenshot.

AA 2.4.7 requires visible focus; 2.4.11 requires that author-created content not entirely hide the control. Custom indicators also need assessment under 1.4.11, including exceptions. AAA 2.4.13 adds area and same-pixel before/after contrast requirements; a mandatory 2 px outline is not a general AA rule.
